And I Quote…

I just read this quote in Whole Living: Body and Soul, (a great magazine with tons of green and healthy living tips) and it really struck me.

“People complain about the price of eggs that could stretch a week but don’t blink at paying $5 for a latte that lasts 10 minutes.”Nicolette Hahn Niman

It’s so true. It’s all about your priorities. Good food that is grown sustainably, animals that are treated well and not tortured and living in filth during their short lives, pesticide-free, natural foods – they’re all worth the price. At least to me. I’d way rather give up other things so I can afford to buy the food and other products that are important to me.

What are you willing to pay more for? Have you made any trade-offs so you can afford to buy these things?

I’m a Green Motherf’er

Last night, I went to an awesome Kick Off Party for my friends Jaime and Chris, who are leaving for their 6-week Wedding Road Trip on Friday. It was a fabulous party, with 80s music, Pop Rocks, 16 Candles on the projector and hilarious road trip vows. Check out her site if you haven’t before – the two of them are about to embark on a cross-country trip filled with local food, good friends and hopefully not too many arguments! 😉 Also, they met in line for a Port-o-Potty, which has to be the most romantic “we met because we had to pee” story ever.

Check out my friend’s awesome 80s jacket and sunglasses. They’re vintage – actually from the 80s!😉

Anyway, while at the party, I had this conversation, and it cracked me up. Drunk Guy, if you’re reading, I’m sorry for calling you Drunk Guy. You were quite entertaining, though!

Drunk Guy: So, green girl (a friend had mentioned my blog), what can I do right now to be more green?

Me: Well, one thing you could do is to not buy things. Just reduce, buy less. Or if you need to buy stuff, buy used.

Drunk Guy: I don’t buy anything. I just find s**t on the side of the road. I’m a GREEN MOTHERF****R.

Heh.

BlogHer Food ’09 & Winners!

Hey all!

My apologies for not announcing the WholeSoy contest winners sooner! I totally forgot that Monday was a holiday when I set up the contest. Anyway, I’ll get to the winners in just a moment, but first….

BHFood09MastheadPost

I just bought my ticket for BlogHer Food ’09, and am so excited! I was hoping to attend the regular BlogHer conference, but it was all sold out by the time I got around to it. But BlogHer Food is not only less expensive, it’s also in my city! I first heard about it when Tina said she was going, and I knew I had to attend. Is anyone else going? I’d love to meet any of you who will be attending, and organize a reader meet-up, and maybe a run or even some tours of San Francisco – I love showing people around! If anyone has any questions about SF at all, please ask! It’s one of the greatest cities ever, in my opinion. 😉

Ok, now the moment you’ve really been waiting for! Without further ado, the winners (selected using the Random Integer Generator):

A free pint of soy frozen yogurt, a free soy yogurt and bonus coupons go to:

Anne K, who said:

I’ll link back in my next post 🙂

and

Rose for her Tweet

And the Grand Prize Winner

Erin who said, Vanilla Bean or Caramel!!

Congratulations! Anne, Rose and Erin, please email me at prettygreenjanet@gmail.com!

You’re all winners to me, of course! I have some more coupons and will be doing another contest in the near future, so stay posted!

What Have You Given Up?

***Have you entered the WholeSoy & Co giveaway yet? Get your entry in to win free soy yogurt & fro yo!***

I was watching Oprah last night and the topic was “What Can You Live Without?” I only watched the first few minutes and am saving the rest to watch later (man, I love TiVo), but it got me thinking about what I can and do live without and have given up for environmental, health, ethical and other reasons. Some things have been harder than others – bananas, for example, which I’ve (somewhat guiltily) started to incorporate back occasionally. Coffee, tea, coconut and chocolate are all staples in my life, and I can’t give them up completely, but I do look for organic, fair trade, shade-grown, sustainable, and all the other green buzzwords. Other things have been easy – using a Sigg water bottle instead of bottled water, walking or taking the bus or working from home when I can (I still have a car but would LOVE to get rid of it some day), ditching high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners. I’m trying to cut back on individually packaged items, and need to work on some recipes to better replicate my favorite bars. I also try to buy meat that is sustainably and humanely raised, though this can be quite difficult at times and I’ve actually been tossing around the idea of cutting back on meat a bit. It’s not always being “pretty green,” but I feel good when I make these choices!

And now, on a totally unrelated note, a picture from my friend’s wedding last weekend. Wait! I think this demonstrates that I can’t give up champagne (though it was a delicious semi-local one). I’m in the middle. 🙂

What have you given up for environmental, health, ethical, etc. reasons? Are there any things you’d like to give up but just haven’t been able to yet? What could you never give up?

Pretty Green Giveaway: WholeSoy & Co

I am so excited to share this giveaway with you guys! Free soy yogurt and frozen yogurt – how cool is that?

wholesou

Last week, I posted about my love for the amazing WholeSoy & Co frozen yogurt, and decided to let the good people there know about my post. Well, I got an amazing response – an email back from Yesica at WholeSoy & Co offering me some coupons to share with friends and family as a thank you! She also told me that my email/post brought a smile to everyone at the company’s face, and then I got a personal email from the Founder/CEO of the company thanking me and mentioning that it warmed the hearts of everyone at their small family company to receive such good feedback. Ted, the Founder/CEO, also said I could contact them any time with ideas or suggestions. What amazing customer service! I’m so glad I decided to let them know about my post. What a great company with such nice people. I already LOVE their products and this just makes me want to buy them even more (and tell everyone I know to do the same!).

I wrote Yesica back and mentioned I’d love to do a giveaway with some of the coupons, and she wholeheartedly agreed! When I returned from my friend’s wedding this weekend, I was in for a great surprise – a package full of coupons! I’m delighted to be able to give some of these away to you, my lovely readers! I have enough that there will be another giveaway in the future, too. 🙂

There will be 3 winners in this contest:

Two people will each win a coupon for a FREE pint of frozen yogurt AND a coupon for a FREE soy yogurt, as well as a few bonus coupons for discounts on WholeSoy & Co products

and

One Grand Prize Winner will win a FREE pint of frozen yogurt, 3 FREE soy yogurts, and a booklet containing a ton of coupons: 3 for 25 cents off a 6 oz cup of yogurt, 3 for $1 off a 24 oz tub of yogurt and 3 for $1 off soy frozen yogurt!

Here’s how to enter:
1. Link to this contest on your blog (if you don’t have a blog you can still enter!)
2. Leave a comment on this blog with what WholeSoy & Co flavor you’d most like to try
3. Twitter about the contest (comment or send me an @ reply to let me know so I don’t miss it!)
4. Add me to your blogroll (again, comment to let me know so I don’t miss it!)

That’s right, four ways to win – one contest entry given for each! Contest runs until Monday, May 25th at 12 noon, so get your entries in!

Good luck!

Neighborhood Fruit

Greetings, friends! I’m off celebrating my friend’s wedding, so I scheduled this post in advance!

neighborhood fruit

My coworker sent me this awesome article this week about a website called Neighborhood Fruit. Neighborhood Fruit connects people with fruit trees with their neighbors who want to eat said fruit! Talk about eating local! Users are currently able to register their trees and find public trees in their area, and will soon be able to search to find neighbors with available fruit. I’ve already found a few nearby fig trees and cherry plums that I will definitely be checking out!

As the article mentioned, it’s still in beta, but I’ve registered and will definitely be keeping my eye on the site. What a great idea!
